Children of present and past CDCR employees are eligible for scholarships from the Association of State Correctional Administrators.

Deadline for applying the 2013 Susan M. Hunter Correctional Scholarship is March 31.

In brief, incoming first-time freshmen, along with enrolled full-time college and graduate students, must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.3. Graduate students’ field of study must be Corrections/Criminal Justice.

Students must be enrolled full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university, or an accredited graduate program. In prior years the scholarships have been: $1,000 for undergraduate students, $1,500 for graduate students and $500 for previous award recipients.

Scholarship applications (and all required documentation) are due to the ASCA office on March 31, 2013 (postmarked no later than March 31, 2013). The Scholarship Review Committee will make its decisions in June 2013.

Winners will be notified by phone.  All other applicants will be notified via email. Scholarship recipients will be announced at the ASCA Summer Business Meeting in Washington D.C.

The total number and amounts of scholarship awards distributed in 2013 will depend upon contributions received.

The scholarship is named in honor of Susan M. Hunter, former director of the Prisons Division at the National Institute of Corrections, as a lasting tribute to her commitment to the field of corrections.  Susan was 53 when she passed away March 14, 2004.
