Services for Correctional Officer Gilbert Cortez are scheduled for Monday, April 8, and Tuesday, April 9.

Officer Cortez and his K-9 Mattie died March 25 when their car went off southbound Highway 79 and rolled over. They and four other K-9 teams in separate cars were on their way to conduct a search of La Cima Fire Camp.

The service schedule is as follows:

Monday, April 8
Viewing will from noon to 4 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 11500 Arlington Ave., Riverside.

Rosary will be from 7:15 to 9 p.m. in St. Edward’s Catholic Church,
417 W. Grand Blvd., Corona.

Tuesday, April 9
The funeral will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Grove Community Church,
19900 Grove Community Drive, Riverside.

Following the funeral, there will be a procession to Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 11500 Arlington Ave., Riverside.

Officer Cortez started his career with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on Sept. 17, 1990.  He was first assigned to the California Institution for Men in Chino

He transferred to Calipatria State Prison on Oct. 29, 1992, and subsequently found a home with the California Rehabilitation Center on Oct. 29, 2001.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time in their lives,” said CRC Warden Cynthia Y. Tampkins.
