Staff from Calipatria State Prison and the Brawley Police Department gave a whole new meaning to the words “protect and serve” as they waited tables at Las Chabelas restaurant in a fund-raising “Tip a Cop” event for the Special Olympics.
Tip a Cop is a law enforcement fund-raising event in which law enforcement officers greet customers and wait tables at a restaurant and collect “tip” donations for Special Olympics.
Staff at many CDCR institutions have raised a total of almost $10,000 for Special Olympics in the last two months.
“The restaurant may provide one day or a whole week where it designates its restaurant for this fundraising effort,” said Patricia Urena Imperial Valley Special Olympics area director.
“Law Enforcement Officers at Tip-A-Cop fundraisers serve as celebrity waiters wearing aprons identifying them as fundraiser participants, and the public loves to have the officers wait on them hand and foot,” said Claudia S. Macias, the Community Resource Manager at Calipatria State Prison, who coordinated the event.
