Centinela recognized for helping special needs children

CEN DSC_0012Centinela State Prison (CEN) was recognized by the Imperial County Office of Education, Special Education Local Plan Area, for outstanding efforts assisting special-needs children in local schools.

School superintendents from 17 local school districts presented the award in recognition of the more than $45,000 given to special-needs classes throughout the Imperial Valley since 2011.

CEN DSC_0009The funds were raised through inmate fund-raising activities conducted by CEN staff.

Several of the school districts have used the funds to start pilot programs that utilize electronic devices, which have significantly improved the learning capabilities of autistic children
