Mule Creek State Prison

Mule Creek State Prison (MCSP) held its eighth annual Memorial Golf Tournament last month to raise funds to help the families of fallen staff.

The tournament was initially started in 2007 in memory of Correctional Officer and 1st Sergeant United States Marine Michael Barnhill who was killed in 2005 while on active duty in Iraq when his vehicle was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

Since 2007, MCSP has continued to hold its Memorial Golf Tournament on the Friday before Memorial Day.  Each year, with the help and support from the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation, MCSP has been able to help families financially with the proceeds raised from the tournament.

For this year’s tournament, MCSP partnered with the Contract Beds Unit, where Capt. Kerry Leisure held his last assignment.  Capt. Leisure was killed on January 23, 2014 in a motorcycle accident while on his way to work.  He is survived by his wife, Sherri Leisure, who is a Case Records Technician at MCSP.

Through this partnership, the event proved to be one of the most successful tournaments held by MCSP.  The proceeds of the golf tournament will go to the Leisure family, including four children.

The success of this year’s tournament is also attributed to the 136 golf participants, the over 20-volunteer staff, some of which were family of past recipients, contributions from CCPOA, CCSO, CCWA, local and out of the area business sponsors and the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation.

Speeches were given by former MCSP Warden William Knipp, current acting Warden Joe A. Lizarraga, CBU Chief Joe Moss and Sherri Leisure.  Numerous members of the Leisure family were in attendance for the event which included a raffle and catered lunch.

Warden Lizarraga vowed to continue the tradition of hosting the golf tournament every year and expressed the positive aspects of the tournament, which includes strengthening of the work family; enhanced employee morale and the ability to help our valued employees during a time of need.

This year’s tournament was held at the Castle Oaks Golf Club in Ione.
