Mule Creek State Prison honored the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack with a brief ceremony held in the center core plaza of the institution.

Plaza walkways were lined with flags on Sept. 11 to mark the date of the single most tragic act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history.

The Mule Creek Fire Department, with the help of the City of Ione Fire Department, raised a large flag over the plaza to commemorate the event.

MCSP Warden Joe A. Lizarraga led staff in the Pledge of Allegiance to open the solemn ceremony.

After a speech by the Warden, staff reflected on their own memories of 9-11 during a moment of silence.

The ceremony concluded with a single trumpet rendition of “Taps” played by Associate Warden Bryan Holmes.
