California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation was represented at a recent charitable sporting event thanks to the staff at California Rehabilitation Center.
CRC staff members participated in the inaugural Hoops-4-Heroes Basketball Tournament on Nov. 15 at Grossmont High School in El Cajon.
Hoops-4-Heroes is a men’s 5-on-5 basketball tournament featuring teams from different branches of military and law enforcement agencies.
The charitable event is designed to support, honor and recognize the men and women of the armed forces and local first responders (police, fire, emergency, hospital, etc.), through an afternoon of basketball competitions, accompanied with live music, raffles and food. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the families of fallen heroes.
The CRC basketball team consisted of Capt. Travis Pennington, Sgt. Marcus Graham and Officers Sammy Bell, Alvin Pressley, Derrick Scott, Augustus Jefferson, David Allen, Blake Clements, Mario Leon and Marcus Bryant.
CRC’s own Officer Detlef Williams was also honored at the event and was presented with a check for $250. Officer Williams suffered a tragic motorcycle accident, which resulted in the amputation of a portion of his leg.
“It was an honor to represent CRC at an event such as this, and it meant even more to us to see one of our own (Officer Williams) being recognized,” said Capt. Pennington.
