Thousands attend ceremony for Sgt. Lunger

Sgt. Scott Lunger, of the Hayward Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on July 22. Avenal State Prison staff members attended his funeral.

Sgt. Scott Lunger, of the Hayward Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on July 22.

Representatives from Avenal State Prison (ASP) recently joined thousands of other law enforcement officials to show support to the Hayward Police Department, an agency reeling from the loss of one of their own.

During an early morning traffic stop, Hayward Police Sgt. Scott Lunger, 48, was shot and killed July 22.

ASP paid its respect to Sgt. Lunger at the Oracle Arena where thousands of Law Enforcement agencies from around the state and country gathered to celebrate the life of someone who made the ultimate sacrifice for his community of Hayward and the State of California.

    I’m confident Avenal State Prison represented the CDCR professionally at this warriors funeral. During these difficult times, law enforcement more now than ever must continue to support each other and do the right thing. May God watch over us all and keep us safe.
