High Desert State Prison

The visiting rooms at High Desert State Prison are getting murals, thanks to the artistic talents of some inmates.

Visiting staff recognized the need to “spruce up” the visiting rooms, especially the areas where the visiting children are allowed to play.

The visiting staff put forth the idea to the inmate populations and quickly identified talented artists.

The inmates provided sketches of what they would like to put on the mural and once approved, were allowed to paint the children’s areas.

Pictured are the inmate artists putting the final touches on the mural in the Facility D Visiting Room. All of the visiting areas should be completed by the end of the year.

I’m glad that there will be some bright colors when i go visit my brother and bring my two nephews along with me. this we allow us to block off the prison world and just enjoy each others company and have lunch together. Thank you!

What a wonderful thing for both the visitors and the inmates! I hope more facilities do this.

This is a great idea. The children visiting should be made comfortable and from the pictures, the inmates have painted friendly and colorful animals! Great job, High Desert.
