California State Prison-Sacramento (SAC) recently held their first Volunteer Appreciation Day Barbecue to celebrate the many hours volunteers invest at the prison.

Volunteers from various programs including numerous leaders in SAC’s religious faith communities, Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Celebrate Recovery Inside, Buddhist Pathways Prison Project, Yoga Seed and Arts in Corrections, as well as others, all came together to visit and share their stories on how their lives has been enriched through interacting and supporting the rehabilitation of offenders.

There is a solid foundation at SAC with many volunteering for years with plans to continue serving for many more.

Meals for the volunteers were served by Warden (A) David Baughman, Associate Warden Laura Eldridge, Community Resource Manager Therese Giannelli, Office Technician Shilo Quinn and Chaplain Roderick Stewart.

Chaplain Stewart was king of the grill, cooking all the hamburgers and veggie burgers despite the 100-degree temperature on Sept. 10. The staff and volunteers are looking forward to next year’s barbecue.

Special thanks to those who contributed to making this event a success, especially the SAC Associate Wardens, all of whom donated monetarily to help make this event a success.

Chaplain Roderick Stewart, left, took on the barbecue duties with much support from Warden (A) David Baughman, center, and other staff.
