State employees help feed the hungry through food drive

CDCR joins effort to raise funds, donate food to state’s needy

When there is a need to help the community, California state employees open their wallets, check books and pantries to help.

In 2015, the California State Employees Food Drive helped feed 130,000 people monthly in Sacramento County alone. Over 100 state agencies, departments and offices, in more than 200 locations participated in the food drive in the great Sacramento area. Throughout the state, CDCR institutions donated to food banks in their local communities. The food drive officially runs now through Jan. 13.

In the Sacramento area, you’ll see barrels ready for food donations. Here’s what they need:

  • Canned tuna or other meats
  • Peanut Butter
  • Beans (canned or dry)
  • Rice
  • Soups
  • Canned fruit in water
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Canned vegetables
  • Dry or canned baby food or formula (non-glass containers preferred)

Note: No opened packages, cans or bottles will be accepted. Also, no homemade canned goods are accepted.

How to help throughout the state

To donate to a food bank anywhere in the state, get a weight receipt and send it to the statewide food drive coordinator. All receipts for food donations, online financial donations and food-drive runs should be received by Feb. 6, 2017, to be credited toward the agency for the food drive totals. Include the agency or department in your email and send the receipts to stateemployees@sacramentofoodbank.org.

Food banks across California

SOUTHERN

Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank is holding a holiday food drive. Vons stores are participating. Last year, the Food Bank distributed 22 million pounds of food, and the Food Bank serves, on average, 400,000 people per month in San Diego County. Info: 858-527-1419, https://sandiegofoodbank.org/

Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has distributed more than 1 billion pounds of food since 1973. It provides food to 320,000 people every month and in 2015 it distributed 52 million meals. Info: (323) 234-3030, https://www.lafoodbank.org/

CENTRAL

Fresno-area Community Food Bank provides food to 200 agencies in Fresno, Madera, Kings, Kern and Tulare Counties and serves over 280,000 people each month totaling over 38 million pounds of food in 2015. Info: (559) 237-3663 ext. 101, https://www.communityfoodbank.net/

Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano provides food to more than 190,000 people every month. Info: (925) 676-7543, https://www.foodbankccs.org/

Community Action Partnership of Kern Food Bank distributes millions of pounds of food annually to hungry individuals, families, non-profits, churches, community centers, homeless shelters, and poverty-fighting agencies throughout Kern County. Merced County Food Bank provides food to nearly 17,000 people every month and in 2015 distributed 4.1 million meals, totaling 4.4 million pounds of food. Info: (209) 726-3663, https://mmcfb.org/

Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County, through a network of more than 200 agencies and programs and over 3,000 volunteers, over 8 million pounds of food are distributed annually to working poor families, children and seniors. Info: (831) 722-7110, https://www.thefoodbank.org/

NORTHERN

Inter-faith Food Bank of Amador County serves as a focal distribution center with 15 satellite locations throughout the county and supplies an average of 70 families daily with enough food for three to five days.
