On Oct. 1, 2017, law enforcement personnel wearing full gear will run a half marathon and Correctional Officer Amelia “Meli” Esquivel is already training for the event.

The Peace Officer Memorial Run is held annually in downtown Modesto to honor all the fallen officers of Stanislaus County. Each mile of the run is dedicated to a fallen officer.

DVI Sgt. S. Harris gives a pep talk to Correctional Officer Esquivel prior to the 5K Run on May 27.

Run organizers issued a challenge to all local agencies as well as those in other counties to don their full gear and take part in the run.

Officer Esquivel, who works at Deuel Vocational Institution, wore full gear and ran in the May 27 Modesto Memorial Classic 5k in preparation for the half-marathon.

She successfully completed the 5k.

This year’s run will honor three additional Stanislaus County officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Full gear is minimum vest, Class  A or B (some departments only have B), utility belt with all essential items, cuffs, baton, spray, gun and work boots.

DVI is inviting all CDCR staff to come out in October to show their support and encouragement for Officer Esquivel and all our men and women in uniform and to show their support for all the families of the fallen officers.
