Wasco State Prison-Reception Center (WSP-RC) recently completed round two of the 2016/2017 grant cycle, with the International Bodhisattva Sangha – Buddhism Education. This grant was an innovative program written to form a “Sangha” (community of mutual supporters) and to study about Buddhism, by receiving instruction in Buddhist teachings and meditation, to include methods for calming the mind and generating compassion of all beings, including oneself.

WSP-RC combined a religious banquet and graduation ceremony to recognize the accomplishments of the inmates completing the innovative grant program.

Originally 25 inmates signed up for the new program, but quickly increased to 50 inmates participating. A waiting list was created for others hoping to get into the class. By the end of the program, 40 inmates completed all mandates of the program to receive a certificate of completion.

WSP-RC will continue this program as an Inmate Leisure Time Activity Group (ILTAG), which is expected to fill all allowable seats with a very long waiting list.
