A correctional officer was attacked by an inmate Friday at California State Prison, Sacramento (SAC).

On Aug. 11 at around 9:30 a.m., inmate Montoya Nichols, 26, approached a correctional officer and began striking him in the head and facial areas with his fists. Responding staff used physical force to quell the incident.

During the altercation, the officer sustained an injury to his head requiring treatment at an outside medical facility. Inmate Nichols sustained only minor injuries and has been transferred to another institution.

Nichols was received by CDCR on Jan. 26, 2017, from San Luis Obispo County to serve a seven-year sentence for assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, battery by gassing, and resisting or deterring a peace officer with the threat of violence.
