Violent crime was down 4 percent nationwide last year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported this week.
The FBI said the annual Uniform Crime Report figures were preliminary.
Violent crime includes murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault, the FBI said. Property crimes fell 0.8 percent in the same period, the FBI said.
The report was drawn from figures submitted voluntarily by law enforcement agencies across the country.
