Shelby “Gene” Farrow Sr., who worked for many years at the California Medical Facility (CMF), passed away on Nov. 24 in Vallejo after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Nine days after his 17th birthday, Shelby joined the U.S. Navy serving as a hospital corpsman, retiring with the rank of chief petty officer in 1974. In 1974, Shelby began his second career with the California Department of Corrections where he worked as a medical technical assistant, senior medical technical assistant and a health program coordinator at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville.

He also dedicated many years to the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA), serving as both CMF MTA Chapter president and CCPOA state vice president.

He retired from state service in 2007 and worked another year as a retired annuitant until April of 2008.


He is survived by his wife, Marge; a son, Shelby Jr. of Vacaville; and a sister, Mary Loyet of Collinsville, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may remember him through a donation to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or any of the various lung cancer foundations.
