The High Desert State Prison/California Correctional Center (HDSP/CCD) Honor Guard participated in the Fallen Officers Memorial Services at the 8th Annual Federal Correctional Institution in Herlong, Calif., on May 22.
For the last five years the High Desert State Prison/CCC Honor Guard has combined with the Herlong Federal Correctional Institution Honor Guard to honor Federal and California State Correctional Officers that have fallen in the line of duty.
The ceremony included the reading of the name of the fallen officer, followed by a toll of a bell to signify their passing. The officers’ are memorialized on a plaque where their names are engraved on brass coin.
As the bell is tolled, the officer’s coin was hung on the plaque. Following the reading of the names, a wreath, which symbolizes the unity of all officers, was placed near the plaques with the officers’ names. The ceremony concluded with the playing of taps.
More than 70 persons attended the service including staff from the California Highway Patrol, Reno Police Department, Nevada Highway Patrol, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, Susanville Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Sierra Army Depot.
