Twenty-three Deuel Vocational Institution (DVI) staff members participated in the annual Special Olympics Torch Run, with 17 actual runners.
DVI raised $700 that was then combined with the money raised from the Tracy Police Department and donated to the Northern California Special Olympics athletes representing San Joaquin County.
The DVI team first participated in the Torch Run with the Tracy Police Department back in 2005 with only a few runners. Each year the staff participation continues to grow in support of the Special Olympics.
“I look forward to this every year,” said Correctional Sgt. Sabrina Harris, “and my main goal is to just get people interested in the cause and to show their support for these courageous athletes. The entire Special Olympics organization is top notch and I am honored to wear my Torch Run shirt and show others that a few hours out of your day can help support an athlete to reach their goal.”
Participating from DVI were:
Sgt. Keith Bennett, Lt. Arnel Bona, Sgt. Sabrina Harris, Officer Michelle Johnson, Personnel Specialist Geri Millard, Sgt. Nick Millard, Officer George Minori, Associate Warden Gene Nies, Counselor (A) Allison Ortega-Shafer, Officer Grace Pena, Parole Agent Jaime Rodriguez, Officer Orlando Rubacalba, Sgt. Homer Shamoeil, Officer Chad Shaw, Community Partnership Manager Martina Virrey, Officer Leticia Zaragoza, Fire Chief Troy Morris, Sgt. Tina Brooks, Officer Technician Jennifer Maloney, Lt.
