Correctional Officer Gilbert Cortez, who was killed last year with his K-9 partner in a traffic accident, will be honored in Southern California and national events this month.
Riverside County will be honoring Correctional Cortez, his K-9 partner Mattie, and Riverside Police Officer Crain at the Riverside County Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony on May 19 in Riverside.
The Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony will at 6:15 p.m. at 4102 Orange Street in Riverside. A Survivors Reception will be at 5:15 p.m. in the 1st floor conference room of the Riverside Sheriff’s Department.
At 5:45 p.m. there will be a Memorial Run.
This event will memorialize all the fallen officers in the history of Riverside County and honor their survivors.
The California Rehabilitation Center (CRC) staff and Honor Guard Team will be participating in the ceremonies.
Officer Cortez also will be honored May 15 at the National Peace Officers Memorial Day in Washington, D.C. The event honors all peace officers killed in the line of duty in 2013. The annual event draws up to 40,000 people.
CDCR Secretary Jeff Beard will attend the event.
Correctional Officer Cortez and his K-9 Mattie died May 25, 2013 when their car rolled off the road. They and four other K-9 teams in separate cars were driving south on State Highway 79 in San Diego County on their way to conduct a search of La Cima Fire Camp.
