California State Prison, Corcoran recently hosted its inaugural Chili Cook-off.
Seven judges including Warden (A) Dave Davey scored seven entries, critiquing them for smell, thickness, color, flavor and aftertaste. Two special categories included “Spiciest Bite” and “Most Unusual Ingredient.”
When the final scores were tallied “Elkaholic Buzz Chili” by Principal, Bernice Van Klaveren, took first place with a prize, a $50 gift card. Ms. Van Klaveren was also won the Most Unusual Ingredient category for her “Snapping Swamp Chili” consisting of alligator sausage.
The entries were put to good use in a Frito Boat sale with the proceeds going to the California Employee Association.
