Members from Avenal State Prison’s Crisis Response Team joined other local law enforcement agencies in the 3rd annual Joel Wahlenmaier Shooting Competition hosted by Fresno Deputy Sheriff’s Association. Money raised from the shooting competition goes toward a scholarship for the police academy.
Deputy IV (Detective) Wahlenmaier, 49, was killed along with Reedley Police Officer Javier Bejar four years ago in a gun battle with an arson suspect in Minkler. Wahlenmaier is survived by his wife Bev, daughter Amy, son Austin, and his parents.
Bev and Austin again came out to show their appreciation to the 70 participants. Organizers say a shooting competition is a great way to keep Wahlenmaier’s legacy alive and support the academy.
The Fresno Deputy Sheriff’s Association event included a BBQ hamburgers, chips, and drinks for everybody in attendance.
