Inmates at Mule Creek State Prison (MCSP) recently participated in an all-yard food sale fundraiser and raised over $4,000 for the Northern California Special Olympics. In addition, food vendor Pizza Factory of Ione also contributed over $2,500 to the inmate cause.
In June, MCSP staff and the Ione Police Department participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run and raised $4,200. To complement MCSP’s effort, the inmate population also wanted to contribute to the cause through a fundraiser.
To galvanize inmate interest, Special Olympic Athlete, Krista, toured the facility prior to the event and displayed her numerous medals and shared her powerful story of triumph.
Voicing the sentiment of many inmates, inmate Jordan states, “many of us have taken more than can ever be repaid, so it is important that we give back in any way possible.”
In October, Special Olympics Athlete, Stephanie and Northern California Special Olympics Director Ruth Sanchez were presented the check on behalf of inmates.
“It is very honorable that the inmate population has dedicated their effort to such a worthy cause. I hope to see MCSP’s commitment to the Special Olympics continue,” said Warden Joe Lizarraga
Since June 2014, MCSP has raised more than $8,200 for the Special Olympics of Northern California.
