An artist has received accolades for his work in a recent art contest, all while serving a sentence at a correctional facility.
Luis, a youth offender at the Ventura Youth Correctional Facility, has a passion for art.
He was recently recognized by the Council of Juvenile Correctional Administrators (CJCA) for his work on a project he calls, “Love.”
The artwork is a drawing he made for his niece along with a story showing his love for her and how he wants to be a positive role model in her life.
The drawing and story he submitted won honorable mention in the CJCA 20th Anniversary National Art Contest.
The competition committee received nearly 200 submissions from 21 states across the country.
CJCA Executive Director Edward Loughran said Luis’ work was, “very inspiring to everyone who read it.”
