The annual Conrad Harrison Christmas Bikes for Kids Program provided 80 new bicycles to children in need during the holiday season. The children also received helmets and a bike lock.
The collaborative effort brings together Centinela State Prison (CEN) with Imperial County Probation Department, El Centro Police Department and El Centro Kiwanis Club.
Donations were made by CEN, Calvary Chapel El Centro, El Centro Police Department and the Narcotics Task Force.
CEN raised the money to purchase the bicycles and delivered them to the event. The recipients are selected by the Imperial County Department of Social Services.
“This is what Christmas is all about” said Centinela State Prison Community Resource Manager Ken Phillips. “We are very happy to help to make Christmas just a little more merry for underprivileged kids.”
The program is the culmination of six month’s work by prison staff to raise money through inmate fundraisers and other donations from local law enforcement agencies and churches.
The event was also supported through donations of bicycle helmets and all bikes were registered by the police department on site.
The Probation Officers Association provided snacks and convinced Santa Claus to make an appearance.
The event was held Dec. 19 next to the Probation Department on Sperber Road in El Centro.
