When California City Correctional Facility (CAC) opened its doors in December 2013, Warden David Long made it clear he wanted to be involved in the community.
“We are focused on making a difference in this community,” he said on his first day. “We will work hard to give back to our neighbors and effect positive change where there is a need.”
In keeping with his promise, the California City Employee Association recently hosted its inaugural “Dollars for Scholars” golf tournament to benefit graduating students at California City High School. The tournament was held at Tierra Del Sol, a local golf course in California City.
A collaborative effort from several employees helped to make this a successful event. The tournament drew approximately 70 players. The entry fee included golf, cart and lunch. Local businesses as well as businesses from Palmdale, Lancaster, Tehachapi and Bakersfield contributed to the cause. In all, more than $5,000 was raised.
Recipient candidates completed questionnaires and were interviewed by a panel of judges, giving them an opportunity to present their dreams and aspirations.
The scholarships were presented at an awards ceremony at the high school on May 12.
