By Lt. Kelli Madsen, AA/Public Information Officer
Ironwood State Prison
When a storm washed out part of a bridge on Interstate 10, trapping a Correctional Officer in the wreckage, a fire crew from two prisons rushed to help.
Chuckawalla Valley State Prison/Ironwood State Prison Fire 55 was the second unit on scene, assisting Cal Fire Engine 49 in the late afternoon of July 19.
The Interstate 10 Tex Wash Bridge collapsed, trapping a vehicle and its driver, who also happened to be a Correctional Officer at Ironwood State Prison.
Cal Fire was in command of the scene.
The Fire 55 Crew included Fire Capt. Richard Selph and two inmate firefighters.
Fire 55 assisted in the rescue by setting up and manning rescue lines required for low angle/swift water rescue and extrication of the trapped victim.
In addition, they assisted medics with preparing the victim for transport to Desert Regional Medical Center.
Ironwood State Prison staff is grateful to all the responding personnel for risking their lives to save others.
