Correctional Sgt. E. Castro was the featured subject of Perry Garfinkle’s Vocations column in the New York Times.

The question-and-answer style piece was published Jan. 16.

Sgt. Castro works at the Folsom Women’s Facility.

“At the age of 27, I was working two jobs as a waitress and also as the foreman of a shipping company. I was exhausted all the time. When my father’s friend suggested a position at the correctional facility, I saw it as one full-time job with good benefits and regular hours. Only later, once I started, did I come to see that I was making a difference in society,” she told Garfinkle.
