“It feels great to be selected for such a title,” Kanavel said. “To represent California City Correctional Facility (CAC) and CDCR, it’s just an absolute honor. Special thanks to all my Ad Seg partners and Sgt. Billy Pollard for nominating me. I also would like to thank everyone who voted for me.”

Voting was open to the public on ServiceWear’s website. Each year, the law enforcement uniform company Horace Small sponsors the Service Spotlight Correctional Officer of the Year Awards, which recognize custody staff throughout the nation who provide excellent work in corrections. Kanavel represented CDCR as one of six finalists from jails and prisons in California, Kentucky, Virginia, Texas, Ohio and Arizona.

A 10-year veteran of the department, Kanavel has worked at CAC since 2013. He currently works in the Administrative Segregation Unit, where his duties include distribution of meals, escorting inmates, conducting security welfare checks and searches of cells and common areas, processing inmates in and out of ASU, and coordinating the Institutional Classification Committee.
