The Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility (RJDCF) this year participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb with a team, led by Fire Chief Hernandez, and raised approximately $7,000.
There were 28 RJDCF staff participating and 12 of those staff climbed in full gear. The event took place Sept. 10 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.
This year’s climb held special significance with the passing of RJDCF Fire Captain Bill Stutzman.
“I cannot begin to express my appreciation and gratitude to each and every one of you, honoring Bill during Saturday’s events,” said Capt. Stutzman’s widow. “It was a privilege to participate in such a meaningful event with the CDCR team. Thank you for all of your support and encouragement.”
The climb is meant to honor and remember the 403 fallen emergency responders who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Each year, approximately 100 firefighters die while serving their communities.
RJDCF team organizers wrote, “A special thank you to the California Crime Victims Coalition, Chick-fil-A, and all the RJDCF staff who contributed their time and money to support this very meaningful event.”
