High Desert State Prison held its first Veteran Walk/Run event this fall.  Staff walked/ran a two mile course outside of the prison and the inmates walked/ran inside the prison on their respective yards.

A total of 240 staff and inmates participated walking/running 770.1 miles.  Staff members that participated also gave non-perishable food items that were donated to the Veterans Food Locker in Susanville.

Warden M. Eliot Spearman said: “This is the first of many more Veteran Walk/Run events that will take place at High Desert State Prison (HDSP).  This event allowed employees of different classifications to get to know one another in a relaxed atmosphere while burning calories.

“Furthermore, our Recreation Coach informed our offenders of what employees were doing to recognize and honor Veteran’s for their service, and this inspired the offender population on two Facilities to participate in the event from inside the secured perimeter. I look forward to participating in this event next year with other members of the HDSP Family.”
