Avenal State Prison LVN Mae Doyle and LVN Claudette Green were the first medical staff from Avenal State Prison on scene the morning of Oct. 17 following a major car accident at Seventh Avenue and Highway 33 involving a Correctional Officer and two civilians.

After assessing the situation, the two nurses stabilized those involved in the wreck. One man was trapped inside the vehicle and needed to be extracted by the responding emergency crews. Other Avenal State Prison staff members also stopped to assist on scene to direct traffic and help calm the situation.

“The driver … was pinned in the driver seat,” said LVN Green. “The fire department had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate him. I climbed in the back seat and stayed in the vehicle the whole time with him as they were cutting the driver door off.”

The Correctional Officer who was involved in the accident was also treated and taken to the hospital with no serious injuries noted.

LVN Green provides care to the driver of one of the vehicles.
