Retired Correctional Lt. Donald Walter Karvonen Sr. passed on March 11, 2018, his family reported.

He briefly worked for CDCR in 1974-1975 before going into private industry.

He returned to CDCR as a Correctional Sergeant at Deuel Vocational Institute in 1983. In 1986, he moved the Richard A. McGee Correctional Training Center as a Sergeant/Instructor.

In 1988, he transferred to the Ishi Conservation Camp. In 1989, he returned to the correctional training center as an instructor.

In 1995 and now a Correctional Lieutenant, he moved the Chamberlain Creek Conservation Camp as the camp commander.

In 2001, he moved to the Valley View Conservation Camp as the camp commander.

From 2003 to April 2007, he was a recruiter for the California Correctional Supervisors Organization.

In 2007, he rejoined the correctional training center as a retired annuitant.
