Kern Valley State Prison (KVSP) staff recently organized their first Cancer Awareness Benefit Ride with 58 motorcycles and two classic cars thundering through the Central Valley.

They traveled a 65-mile route that ended at Mooney Grove Park in Visalia.

About 200 people participated in the post ride festivities which included an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet, a vehicle show, prizes, a DJ and an afternoon of visiting with friends.

A custom logo was designed and displayed on nearly 200 t-shirts which were sold before and during the event. Prizes were donated by KVSP employees and local businesses.

The event was sponsored by Above the Rest Academy. Other event sponsors include the California Correctional Supervisors Organization (CCSO) who donated $2,000, the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA), California Crime Victims Coalition, Correctional Peace Officers (CPO) Foundation, KVSP Employees Association, California Chicano Workers Association (CCWA), Kuubix, and Bike Lane Garage.

The efforts of all involved raised $10,359.44. The money raised was given to a KVSP staff member who is battling a very serious form of cancer.

A committee will identify a worthy beneficiary each year.
