CCI Honor Guard opens day’s activities at Crest RV Resort

On Sep.15, the First Responder Appreciation Day event at the Crest RV Resort was a huge success. The morning came quick as the sun crept over the foothills of the Bakersfield Valley.  A crane hoisted up the star spangled banner for all to see as the dawn’s early light illuminated her glory.

As the canopies were being raised, the vendors were rolling in and the local news media began setting up for their morning broadcast.

The California Correctional Institution (CCI) Honor Guard opened the ceremonies with the flag presentation. Kern County Search and Rescue helicopter was right on time with their fly-over circling the event in the air.  The Honor Guard stood at attention and the crowd was silent. In attendance to honor the local first responders were Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh, Assemblyman Vince Fong, Senate candidate Shannon Grove, and Tayler Cravens representing Senator Jean Fuller’s office.

Goh and Fong commended CCI on their efforts to raise money for the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House.  The Crest also donated 10 percent of their restaurant sales to the McDonald house.

Since opening in 2009, the Bakersfield Ronald McDonald House has provided comfort, care and support to children and families in Southern California. Their hope is to create a community where children and their families can embrace life and healing with a sense of hope, enthusiasm, courage and joy by keeping families close to each other while getting care they need. They are also one of very few Ronald McDonald House Charities chapters across the world that operates a cost-free, medically-supervised Camp for children with cancer and their families to brighten their days during this dark time.

The Crest Resort owner joined Correctional Officer Eric Gaona, from CCI who is on detached duty working on the Debrief Task Force (DTF) for the Office of Correctional Safety (OCS), to present Scarlett Sabian of the McDonald’s house with the money raised in donations during the event.
