Barry MacTarnaghan, a senior psychologist with California Men’s Colony, was found deceased on Thursday, Dec. 27. The San Luis Obispo Police Department began searching for him after he was reported missing Dec. 13.
“Just before noon on Thursday, police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in the area of Granada Drive and Empleo Street,” according to a statement issued by the police. “We are sad to report that when officers arrived, they located missing person Barry MacTarnaghan deceased inside of his vehicle.”
According to police, the case was turned over to the coroner and the family was notified. Peer Support has been activated for CDCR staff.
MacTarnaghan, 49, worked at various institutions throughout the state including California Correctional Institution (CCI). He started his CDCR career on Aug. 1, 2005, as a psychology intern at CCI.
In November 2006, he promoted to clinical psychologist and in June 2009 he promoted again to senior psychologist. In 2012 he was transferred to CMC as a clinical psychologist. He promoted to senior psychologist in July 2014. In May 2018, he was transferred to San Quentin as a senior psychologist but was based out of CMC.
