A crochet and beading program for inmates at Pelican Bay State Prison created a positive and productive pursuit inside and outside the walls.

But the program needs donations of yarn, beads and other materials to keep the program going.

“In these few short months, you can see a change in the participating inmates,” said Correctional Officer Jessica Valdez, the staff facilitator for the new program. “They are excited to be a part of something bigger than themselves and actually be able to help others in need.”

It is hoped that a positive and creative environment will help the inmate participants to thrive and experience personal growth, she said.

The completed crafts are donated to the community and other outside non-profit organizations, Valdez said. Some of the donations include stuffed animals, hats, scarves, booties, beanies, blankets, necklaces, and bracelets.

My name is Jessica Valdez and I am the Staff facilitator for a new program at Pelican Bay State Prison in D facility level 2. The program is “Crafts for Community” (crochet and beading) and the purpose and goal of Crafts for Community is to teach basic fundamentals of the craft, problem solving, and to promote patience and a sense of self-worth to the participants.

“The program is not a funded program as of yet,” she said.  “We are making items as we receive donations.”

The following items are needed:

Beading program: Beading needles 10-12, Needle gloves size 6, Beading thread cones black or white, Looms, sinew, Barrel Claps, Earring Hooks, all Beads (Transparent seed beads all colors, Opaque seed beads all colors size 11, Pony seed beads all colors, Bugle, Spaghetti and other types of beads.) Beading jars or containers, Safety scissors, Leather needles, Craft leather, and any books on beading.
