On Jan. 26, Pine Grove Youth Conservation Camp firefighters walked onto the field at CSU-Sacramento to be recognized for their efforts fighting fires in 2018. The small ceremony was one part of the 45th annual Guns and Hoses Bowl, a charity football game between local firefighters and law enforcement officers. The youth firefighters also took part in a Kids Safety Fair.
This year, the game honored the recent deaths of many officers killed in the line of duty as well as firefighters who risked their lives in the 2018 California wildfires.
Pine Grove YCC staff and inmates involved included parole agents Jeff Cramer, Eric Taylor and Sandra Magdaleno, Youth Counselor Debby Brady, CALFIRE Capt. Dirk Widman and youth firefighters Osvaldo Cardenas, Mathew Cisneros, Gerardo Flores, Terrence Hamilton, Jesus Hernandez, Moses Perez-Herrera, Jason Simmons, Anthony Tieu, Daniel Vasquez-Moreno and Zachary Roussel.
“It was really special to be treated like a regular member of the firefighting community and not judged on our past mistakes as teenagers but for our contributions as young adults,” said youth offender Jesus Hernandez.
