Staff from Division of Adult Parole Operations across the state once again laced up their shoes and made the trek from Baker to Las Vegas for the annual run in late March. This year they honored the memory of fallen Officer Armando Gallegos.
“The team did a fantastic job of coming together and making it happen. We crossed the finish line with minimal injuries, and without penalties. The team finished with a time of 17:44 and we placed 163,” wrote Parole Agent Mireya Audet, one of the team’s organizers. “This is the fastest time to date and we broke the 18:00 hour mark. (The team was also) a part of Baker to Vegas history as this was founder Chuck Foots last race, and the last time the Westgate Hotel will host. The most important thing is the camaraderie that is shared on the course and the friendships that have developed over the years.”
The team presented the baton to the widow of Officer Gallegos during the awards ceremony. She said she was grateful to the CDCR teams who ran in her husband’s honor.
The Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay features 120 miles of pavement, 20 stages, over 8,000 runners, guests, family members, and support staff. The run challengers participants with hot days and cold nights, according to organizers.
