Family reported the passing of Vivien “Viviana” Martinez, the state’s first Hispanic female superintendent for the California Youth Authority (today known as Division of Juvenile Justice). She passed away May 7, 2019.
She began her state career in 1974 as an administrative assistant at California State Polytechnic University. She then went to work as a social worker at Lanterman State Hospital.
She joined CYA as a social worker in 1988. She promoted to Health and Safety Officer and was appointed superintendent at Southern Youth Correctional Reception Center & Clinic in Norwalk. She retired in 2004.
