Wasco State Prison-Reception Center (WSP-RC) recently hosted the inaugural Chuck Howell Memorial Golf Tournament, formerly known as the WSP-RC Warden’s Golf Tournament. The tournament was been renamed in honor of beloved staff member, Charles “Chuck” Howell, who unexpectedly passed away in December 2017. Howell was an avid golfer and a key contributor to the success of this tournament over the years.
Warden John Sutton and his wife Elizabeth were on hand on this sunny day, greeting the 144 golfers and 50-plus volunteers who donated their time to be a part of this event.
The institution was well represented as officers, supervisors, managers, administrators, employees of all classifications and ranks came together as a unit to make this the most successful WSP-RC tournament ever. The increased popularity of this tournament resulted in team slots filling quickly.
“The participation and teamwork you see out here is a reflection of the comradery amongst our staff and the culture of our institution. The contributions made by all involved have made this event a huge success and has strengthened the working relationship our institution shares with our local community. I couldn’t be more proud of my staff” Warden Sutton said.
All proceeds of this event will go toward supporting local non-profit charities within the community of Wasco including Relay for Life, Kern County Honor Flight, The Orange Heart Foundation, Wasco Little League, and the Sheriff’s Activity League to mention a few. WSP-RC continues to actively support the local community, partnering with local organizations that give back to the local community and maintaining a positive influence within Kern County.
